Guest Speaker: Helen M. G. Watt, PhD

Girls and Mathematics

10.09.2011

Dr. Helen Watt from the Monash University, Australia spoke on 6.09.2011 on the topic: “Girls and Mathematics: Why do gender differences persist in educational and occupational outcomes?”

Despite similar achievement, girls have lower self-concepts and values than boys concerning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). They also undertake less advanced mathematical education and show lower representation in STEM-related careers. Prof. Watt draws upon two large-scale datasets – one from Australia and the other from North America - to examine the psychological processes which help explain this resistant and persistent phenomenon. Implications for educators have been highlighted with regard to promoting girls’ lower self-concepts and interests relative to boys.
