Incubator Stay Anastasia Datsogianni

Hosting Institution: Department of Psychology, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Canada
International advisor: Prof. Henry Markovits

Anastasia 3My incubator stay was held in Montreal, Canada from 01.09.2018 to 03.10.2018 at the UQAM University under the supervision of Prof. Henry Markovits. I was working in Prof. Markovits’ laboratory which consists of PhD students and research assistants who work on many different projects concerning either logical reasoning or social reasoning. I was also part of their weekly lab meeting (2-3 hours per week) which aims at exchanging updates between the lab members and Prof. Markovits regarding each ongoing project. I set additional meetings with Prof. Markovits about my PhD project.

I also worked particularly in a new project of the lab during this month investigating elementary students’ logical reasoning strategies, their mathematical skills in statistical tasks which require proportional reasoning skills to some extent as well, children’s math gender stereotypes and their performance on a cognitive reflection test. I was involved in the design process of this new study in close cooperation with three members of the aforementioned lab. We arranged weekly meetings with this team about 3 to 5 hours per week. This collaborative work continues through skype meetings from the end of my incubator stay onwards.

Anastasia_1The research area not only of this particular project but also of the whole laboratory is closely related to my PhD project and this cooperation really boosted my understanding in the area of logical reasoning, while relevant fruitful discussions with the lab members and Prof. Markovits gave me the opportunity to really delve into the research field of logical reasoning through a real and impressive team work.

During the first two weeks of my stay in Montreal, I also focused on a poster submission at a Mathematics Education conference referring to a small part of the pilot study. I did further steps concerning my first study data analysis which is planned to be finalized by the end of October. Moreover, I focused on the design of my second study receiving input from my international supervisor Prof. Markovits and his laboratory.

Anastasia Datsogianni is conducting research on elementary students' conditional reasoning skills in mathematical and everyday contexts under the supervision of Prof. Stefan Ufer (LMU, Mathematics Education Department), Prof. Beate Sodian (LMU, Chair for Developmental Psychology) and Prof. Henry Markovits (Université du Québec à Montréal).
