Evidence based practice: choices made and those ahead

Abstract

The description of the process of evidence based practice as a suggested way for practitioners and clients/patients to make decisions was introduced over two decades ago. What has been the fate of this process? What has been forwarded in place of this process and what are related reasons? Why are so many avoidable misrepresentations of the process published? Who benefits and who loses from these misrepresentations? What are some of the most important contributions of the process of EBP, for example encouraging involvement of clients/patients as informed (rather than misinformed) participants in decisions made.
These questions will be addressed in this lecture drawing on related literature in and concerning the helping professions and the fate of new ideas.

Short Bio

Eileen Gambrill, PhD, is Professor of the Graduate School, School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A. Her areas of interest include decision making in the helping professions, obstacles to the integration of research, practice and policy in the helping professions, and the ethics of practice. Publications include Propaganda in the Helping Professions (2012, Oxford University Press), Critical thinking in the helping professions (3rd Ed., 2012, Wiley), and Social work practice: A critical thinker's guide (3rd Ed, 2013, Oxford University Press).
