REASON Event Series by Prof. Dr. Marcia Linn

Guest Lecture and Workshop on "What makes inquiry science instruction successful for college and precollege students?"

11.05.2016 – 13.05.2016

On behalf of the REASON program at the Munich Center of the Learning Sciences (MCLS) we are very pleased to announce the event series held by:

Prof. Dr. Marcia Linn, University of California at Berkeley, U.S.A. on the topic of: What makes inquiry science instruction successful for college and precollege students?

Guest lecture: Wednesday, 11.05.2016, 18:00-19:00, CAS Building, Seestraße 13
Workshop: Freitag, 13.05.2016, 9:00-13:00, Leopoldstraße 13, Room 3221

Abstract: Effective science inquiry instruction prepares students to independently interpret personally
relevant scientific materials such as graphs of the benefits of alternative treatments, to make decisions
about science experiments, and to build coherent understanding of science. Recent research on ways to
support students as they investigate dynamic scientific models, interpret graphs of results, and
collaborate to solve challenging problems suggests promising ways to lead inquiry courses. In
undergraduate research experiences, pre-college inquiry labs, and after school project courses, students
benefit from guidance that promotes what we call knowledge integration. Examples from multiple
courses across the age spectrum will illustrate these points.
